Instrumentation

A Large set of on-line/off-line instruments are available at the ACMCC to provide a robust calibration of Aerosol Chemical Monitors.

ACSM – Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor

The Aerodyne Aerosol Chemical Speciation Monitor (ACSM) measures quantitative particle mass loading and chemical composition in real-time for non-refractory sub-micron aerosol particles. Smaller, lower cost and more robust than our AMS instruments, the ACSM is designed for long-term unattended deployment and routine monitoring applications.

Calibration Bench

The calibration bench is composed of the  Differential Mobility Analyser 3081 from TSI with an X-ray neutralizer, The Centrifugal Particle Mass Analyser Mk2 from Combustion,  the Condensation Particle Counter 3775 from TSI, and the atomizer 3776 from TSI. It consists of generating ammonium nitrate (NO3NH4) and ammonium sulfate (SO4(NH4)2) particles, the size of which is fixed at 300 nm and whose concentration (cm-3) is measured. It is then possible by considering the particle density to calculate the mass of the particle stream entering the ACSM.

Aethalometer AE33

The Rack Mount Aethalometer® models are constructed in a standard 19-inch enclosed chassis. These Aethalometer models are most commonly used in air monitoring network stations, providing continuous unattended operation. The instruments simultaneously sample and measure the mass concentration of black carbon particles in the air.

Real-Time Total Carbon Aerosol Analyzer

The Magee Scientific Real-Time Total Carbon Aerosol Analyzer, Model TCA-08, is a revolutionary scientific instrument that measures the Total Carbon Content (“TC”) of suspended aerosol particles The measurement of Black Carbon (BC) is based upon the absorption of light by carbon in a micro-crystalline graphitic structure.

Filter sampling and chemical analyses

Two low-volume (1m3/h) Partisol Plus (Thermo) filter samplers are available for off-line intercomparison with various sampling cut-off diameters (PM1, PM2.5, PM10). One Partisol is equipped with the EUSAAR/ACTRIS recommended VOC denuders PM (gravimetry), OC/EC, major anions & cations, and sugar (levoglucosan, …) are performed at LSCE.

URG

The URG-9000D Ambient Ion Monitor (AIM) is a scientifically advanced, multi-pollutant monitoring method that allows for continuous measurements of particle sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium. At the same time, the AIM provides time-resolved gas measurements of sulfur dioxide, nitric acid, and ammonia.

Fidas

The FIDAS 200 is the only optical analyzer in the world certified for the continuous and real-time determination of PM-10 and PM-2.5 fractions simultaneously. The concentration in number and granulometry between 0.18 and 18 µm in 64 size classes mass fractions PM1, PM4 and TSP.

TEOM FDMS

The TEOM® 1405-F Ambient Particulate Monitor with FDMS is a mass measurement monitor that incorporates the patented Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) to measure particulate matter mass concentrations continuously. The TEOM 1405-F Monitor is a true “gravimetric” instrument that draws ambient air through a sample filter for collection at a constant flow rate. The monitor continuously weighs the filter calculating near real-time mass concentrations.
